A Russian citizen has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for espionage on behalf of Ukraine


According to the court case, Victor Shur, has been collecting an information, regarding the state secrets of secure facility of the Defense Ministry of Russian Federation.

Moscow. October 8th. INTERFAX.RU reports – Bryansk regional court has sentenced a Russian citizen Victor Shur to twelve years in prison for committing espionage act of treason.

“Shur, being a citizen of the Russian Federation, is found guilty of carrying out the intelligence activities on the territory of Bryansk region on December 9th 2014. He has collected classified information regarding state secrets of secure facility of the Defense Ministry of Russian Federation. The instructions were made by the State Border Service of Republic of Ukraine”, – stated in the Court’s website.

The man was arrested by The Federal Security of the Russian Federation (FSB) while trying to cross the Russian-Ukrainian border on the same day. According to the press release, if the said information was handed over to the Ukrainian special services, it could have been used against security interests of Russian Federation.

The 12-year sentence is to be served in high-security prison. Shur pleaded guilty to the charges of treason and collaboration with the secret services of a foreign state.

The FSB regional department reported the Interfax that during the arrest the accused “possessed the technical means of espionage equipment, which were previously provided to him by employees of Ukrainian special services, as well as information, which he reported regarding the accomplishment of the intelligence task. The equipment was confiscated and the information retrieved”.
“Shur admitted his guilt and confessed his crimes,” – the department stated.
